The children in Reception have a rich and balanced curriculum which is both practical and more formal. This is the beginning of full-time attendance at school; regular attendance at assemblies is introduced as the children become more involved in the Stonar Prep community.  The girls and boys learn to read, write, count, investigate, problem-solve and communicate effectively. Individuality is respected and encouraged through a programme that they enjoy with opportunities for each child to gain confidence and shine. There is access to outdoor play areas and everyone enjoys the wonderful Stonar grounds. 

Throughout the year, the children follow the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ which includes: Playing and Exploring; Active Learning; Creating and Thinking Critically; Personal, Social and Emotional Development;Communication and Language; Physical Development; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive Arts and Design.

Gymnastics, drama, games, Forest School, French, ICT, music and swimming tuition are all part of the weekly timetable. Optional extras include an after and before school facility in the nursery as well as clubs such as dance, football, martial arts and ballet.  All of our four year old children are eligible for the government grant.


As the girls and boys move through Years One and Two they learn to think more for themselves and manage their school day independently. The children engage in an exciting and inspiring curriculum which aims to encourage focus, good study skills and a strong sense of achievement as well as an understanding of the wider world. Topic work is supported by individual research, field trips and outings which extend the children's general knowledge and cement a positive attitude towards learning.

Core activities are taught imaginatively so as to develop interest and a passion for learning. The core subjects are taught daily in small classes by the form tutor allowing a strong focus on the basic foundations of learning.  Small classes ensure that every child benefits from an individual learning journey on which they progress at their own pace. The class community instils positive citizenship skills with a high level of courtesy and responsibility. Great emphasis is placed on personal, social and communication skills so that each child is able to present themselves with the confidence and self-respect of a Stonar pupil.
