Inspirational STEM careers event

Year 10-13 pupils were inspired by three excellent scientists at the latest STEM careers event at Stonar.

The careers event focused on scientists sharing their own personal careers paths and offering advice and guidance on a variety of possible career options, including both academic and vocational routes.

The evening included short presentations by experienced speakers, followed by questions and answers. The speakers were Nia Brown from the UK Environment Agency, Connor Goddard from Renishaw and David Wicks, Head of Science at Stonar.

Nia Brown, an environmental scientist, shared her work on managing environmental projects which also included advising Government ministers on potential flooding risks across the UK. She outlined her current work, currently managing the local Customer and Engagement Team, leading the Environment Agency's communications and engagement response to environmental incidents.

Connor Goddard MBCS is a Software Engineer at Renishaw, shared his work as a member of the Data Solutions team, and outlined his current work involving harnessing the power of machine learning to make automatic predictions and provide new insights for customers through the analysis of raw telemetry data.

David Wicks, Head of Science, gave an entertaining and informative talk about his own journey into science, from Wellbeck and Sandhurst training, to working on bomb disposal challenges in Northern Ireland as part of the British Army.

Anthony Curtis, Head of Careers, said 'this event involved three highly qualified and experienced scientists sharing their own personal journeys into STEM related careers and their advice and humour really made science come alive as a career option. With so many planned new careers in science, coupled with a national projected shortage of scientists, it certainly gave us all food for thought. I would like to sincerely thank all the speakers for an excellent event'.
