RUH Hospital Conference for Year 12

Year 12 Stonar students with an interest in pursuing a medical or health related career attended an innovative work experience conference at The Royal United Hospital (RUH), Bath in June.

The interactive conference focused on a range of different careers and sought to inspire girls to succeed in a highly competitive health care environment. Workshops included careers in nursing, emergency heart care, trauma surgery, using a defibrillator and plastic surgery, medical simulations, radiology, obstetrics and midwifery, how to take a patient history and global health care issues in the third world. Students were also able to ask questions to a junior doctor on the reality of medical school and being a trainee doctor. One of the highlights of the course involved students watching a complete knee replacement surgery after meeting the patient on the first day.

Evie (Year 12) said, "this was an amazing experience and a fascinating insight into the medical world. I particularly enjoyed the paediatric world health talk as it was eye opening to see that you could travel and do medicine in every far corner of the world. Overall the three days was truly captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience."

Holly (Year 12) said "this was a wonderful opportunity to get a good insight into the range of different health care specialisms. We were privileged to watch the live elective knee surgery and this gave me a very good insight into the reality of health care. It also inspired me to consider health care around the world and think about different aspects of my planned medical career after Stonar."

Anthony Curtis, Head of Careers, said that this was an outstanding conference and work experience opportunity for our Year-12 students who found this conference challenging but also exciting and extremely rewarding. They all performed extremely well in the interactive sessions and came away with a much greater insight and understanding of the many and varied careers in a rapidly changing health care environment, together with the values of multi-disciplinary team working. Anthony said, 'Each year, the RUH Education Team exceeds the expectations of all of our students in terms of challenge, innovation and insights into health and medicine. I would also like to sincerely thank Daniele Fawkner-Corbett and the Education Team at the RUH, Bath for making our students feel so welcome and for providing this unique experience for our students which was such a tremendous success'.
