Particle Physics Masterclass for 6th Form

Sixth form physics students enjoyed a Particle Physics Masterclass at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories.

The day was run by the UK's Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), a UK government body that carries out civil research in science and engineering, and funds UK research in areas including particle physics, nuclear physics, space science and astronomy.

The busy day included inspirational talks on the Standard Model of the Universe. Pupils also undertook some simulated research into the Higg's Boson, and toured one of the largest particle accelerators in the UK. The visit provoked much debate on the merits of centrally-funded research and the place of blue-skies academic research in modern society. They also provided an excellent lunch!
