Model United Nations day

On Stonar’s Model United Nations day, Senior School pupils were given the opportunity to develop all aspects of their public speaking skills.

In today’s contemporary job marketplace, public speaking is undoubtedly an essential skill almost whatever post-school environment pupils enter. The pupils enjoyed the opportunity to wear smart business attire to reflect the expectations of a commercial environment.

The day started with an assembly to demonstrate the principles of an Model United Nations. Staff debated the motion that ‘all economic development is damaging to the environment’. Staff, representing a range of countries, argued with passion using a wide range of rhetorical devices to present their arguments.  Working under time-pressure, the pupils were given two hours to research what their own particular country would ‘think’ about their motion, appoint speakers and practise the separate roles of speaker, chairperson and questioner. The pupils were expected to work independently, and at a fast pace.

Years 7 and 8 presented, with confidence, their motions about marriage and the distribution of world resources. Lunch time food, from six continents also reflected the international nature of the day.

In the afternoon, Year 9 and 10 pupils presented their motions to the whole school in a packed Buckle Hall. Especially impressive were the confidence with which speeches were delivered and the insight of the questions from the delegates. “I wasn’t sure that I could speak in public at first, but I quickly enjoyed the buzz of talking to everyone. I know I can do it now.” These words from a Year 10 pupil summed up the excitement and success of the day.

Our NACE group schools host an annual MUN event in Spain. Having had such an exciting day, we are expecting a good number Stonar pupils wanting to take advantage of this opportunity next year.
