Routes after school

Pupils learned more about alternative paths after school, other than university, in a recent careers evening.

The intention was to help pupils plan for life after Stonar and consider alternatives to university including taking a gap year, undertake voluntary work, or studying for a work-based apprenticeship.

Jess Toogood, a second year undergraduate student studying zoology at the University of Bristol, shared her gap experiences of undertaking project conservation work in the Seychelle Islands and also her summer camp work in the USA. Emma Double, a recent former Head Girl at Stonar, shared her experiences of undertaking a business apprenticeship at New College, Swindon. Jonathan Hardwick, South West Regional Director, ISCO/Futurewise (Stonar's partner careers provider) outlined the various routes that pupils could take as an alternative to attending University. Additional information was also provided by approved GAP year providers.

Issy in Year 12 said 'this was a very informative careers event which showed us a range of different options that are available to us, including work with animals and young children. I especially loved seeing the pictures and hearing about the giant tortoise on the Seychelle Islands that Jess got the opportunity to work with!'

Anthony Curtis, Head of Careers, said this was an excellent careers event which gave parents and pupils real choices on a range of opportunities and experiences after Stonar. Anthony also said, 'I would like to thank Jess Toogood and Emma Double who gave us two fascinating and very different talks on GAP year opportunities and apprenticeship work respectively. Jess and Emma's talks gave our pupils and parents a genuine insight into these opportunities from individuals who had recently experienced what it was really like.'
