Artist's workshop for pupils

Stonar art students have been treated to an intimate workshop with Bath-based artist, Helen Garrett.

Helen shared with them the journey to an exhibition, taking them through the entire process she went through with her 'The Secret Joy' exhibition. Beginning with the original inspiration, Helen explained the process of the research phase; collecting materials and creating sketchbooks, then selecting paint and producing final artworks.

Pupils were also able to participate in a sensory practical session; where they were taught to observe and explore natural forms closely. Helen explained the importance of bringing all their senses, as well as imagination, into play and using a variety of techniques to develop their understanding with the goal of producing better artworks. Pupils handled a collection of natural objects and then chose one and worked on charcoal and ink drawings, using natural charcoal and feather quills.

An exhibition of Helen's beautiful and evocative work has been on display in the Sixth Form Centre this month. To learn more about Helen Garrett, visit
