Athletes compete at schools Olympics

Stonar athletes competed at the ‘III NACE Olympic Games’ in Valencia last week.

As part of the NACE schools group pupils at Stonar now have the opportunity to take part in a range cross cultural events and activities with sister schools.

Over 200 pupils from 7 schools in the group travelled from France and Spain to compete at host school, Agora Lledo in Valencia. Despite having the lowest number of competitors, Stonar came away with 3 golds, a silver and a bronze trophy.

In the pool Stonar won 4 trophies: Isobel Criddle of Corsham won 3 x gold medals in the 25m freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Bella Harris-Johnstone of Isleworth won Silver in the 50m breaststroke.

On the track Bella Harris-Johnstone came 3rd with a Bronze in the 1200m race.

Vicky Gray, Stonar’s PE teacher said “It was the most incredible experience: our pupils had a fantastic time. The event was brilliantly organised; staff and pupils appeared on the local radio and pupils really enjoyed time with their host families. It’s such a great opportunity for children to broaden their horizons and compete internationally”.

At the closing ceremony, the NACE Olympic torch was handed over to Stonar who will host the ‘IV NACE Olympic Games’ in 2016.

New friendships and lasting bonds were made; following emotional goodbyes, competitors resolved to meet again at the next NACE exchange event.
