Spanish Exchange for Year 9 and 10

In March pupils embarked on a new adventure, a week-long exchange with NACE's Agora Lledó International School in the Spanish town of Castellón de la Plana near Valencia.

After what felt like a long journey with little, if any, sleep, we arrived at our host destination and were greeted by a rather large welcoming committee. Although exhausted and slightly overwhelmed, the girls gradually plucked up the courage to get off the bus to meet their host families and they were promptly whisked off to their various homes for the week. The Spanish families were raring to go as it was the festival of San José, one of the biggest in the town's annual calendar, and sleep was not on the agenda. The girls coped very well and Josephine even witnessed her first and possibly last bull fight, whilst others were thrust straight into Spanish life at large family gatherings and firework displays.

During the three days in school, the girls were exposed to a range of new and interesting experiences. The first day saw them shadowing Spanish students in their own lessons. They witnessed paella being made by the school chef, Marcos, and then had the pleasure of eating it in the canteen much to the envy of the Spanish students.

The girls also represented the school well in various sports with basketball proving a particular success, whilst Eliza, Ollie and Consuela played mixed football valiantly. On the last day, they all enjoyed salsa dancing.

As the week progressed, so did their Spanish and they especially enjoyed ordering beverages and snacks in the canteen.

Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us and sunny Spain failed to live up to its name. The day spent in Valencia was however the brightest of them all and Las Fallas did not disappoint. The Fallas were as impressive in real life as they are in the pictures and the Mascleta firework display produced a deafening roar that is hard to describe on paper.

Thursday was the Día del Padre (Father's Day) and the girls spent the day with their families doing various activities ranging from going to the beach, meeting up with friends or going to nearby caves.

In summary, this was a week of new experiences and new friendships and we look forward to welcoming the girls from Agora Lledó School back here in June.
