STEM Careers Evening Inspires Pupils

More than 40 Year 9-13 pupils, parents and staff at Stonar were entertained and informed recently by an evening celebrating careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

A diverse range of careers were presented and discussed by visiting experts from the fields of nanotechnology (small particles) and digital media. Jeremy Warren, CEO of NanoSight, spoke at the event, as did Old Stonarian Georgina Brown from Boson Media, giving pupils insight in to very different career paths with STEM at their core.

Pupils were also shown a video, Generation 2025, created by Virgin Media Business in conjunction with The Future Laboratory, which demonstrates a vision of a hyper connected world in the future. This was combined with advice from Mr Wicks, Head of Science on the variety of different routes into STEM careers.

Yolanda Huang, a Year 13 Sciences student, said, "this evening was really useful for giving us invaluable advice and guidance on a range of possible future STEM careers."

Meggie Repp, Year 13, said "I was amazed to see the breadth of STEM careers on offer and the Generation 2025 video we were also shown is starting to happen now! I was also reassured that you can change careers in science and you don't necessarily have to stay with one specific career which I find exciting."

Anthony Curtis, Head of Careers, said "this was a unique and fascinating evening which demonstrated not only the diversity of STEM based careers that were available but also how science, technology, engineering and maths skills interacted with one another in modern STEM careers. We are grateful to all of our expert speakers who took the time to share their passion and expertise in their STEM careers."

In addition Year 7 pupils demonstrated their work for the Lego Robotics Challenge.
