Stonar School

You are here: Welcome International Pupils Academic

Stonar offers EAL lessons to international pupils as part of the curriculum. Extra individual tuition may be advisable and can be arranged.

  • Prep School Years 4 - 6 (age 8 - 11) EAL support is given to international pupils in the prep school. Pupils usually have 4 lessons per week. Materials appropriate for younger learners are used and lessons concentrate on building vocabulary and developing listening and speaking skills essential for participating in class.
  • Years 7 -9 (age 12 - 14) International pupils may study EAL instead of joining English lessons. This gives pupils the chance to concentrate on developing their linguistic level with the support of specialist staff. Developing a sound command of the English language is vital for academic success. Pupils who have a good command of English after their first year may be moved into mainstream English classes until the end of Year 9. Pupils have the opportunity to take Cambridge ESOL exams (PET, FCE, CAE, CPE) or IELTS at a local centre.
  • Years 10 and 11 (age 15 - 16) Pupils follow an IGCSE English as a Second Language two-year course. This course concentrates on the skills pupils will need in life for future jobs or study. At the end of the course pupils will be able to use English effectively for practical communication and have a good awareness of how the English language works. In exceptional cases, pupils who are fluent in English may follow mainstream GCSE English Language and English Literature courses.
  • Sixth Form (age 17 - 18) Pupils are prepared for the IELTS exam or FCE/CAE (necessary for UK and worldwide university entry). When requested, TOEFL preparation lessons (necessary for university entry to US institutions) are available at an extra cost. Some pupils may spend 3 years in the Sixth Form to achieve the best possible results.
